Le projet Tour & Taxis a reçu une Médaille dans la catégorie 1 « Conservation » du Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne. Concours Europa Nostra 2008. Médaille attribuée pour « la haute qualité du travail de conservation, à la fois considérable et modeste, qui rend hommage au passé industriel du complexe ».
"The Tour & Taxis project received a medal in the category 1 « Preservation » of the European Union Cultural Heritage Prize. Europa Nostra contest 2008. The medal is attributed to «the high quality of the preservation work, as it is both considerable and modest, and honors the industrial past of the site.» Erected at the beginning of the 20th century, the Thurn & Taxis complex (35 hectares) is one of the finest examples of multimodal platform in the world. Designed as a concentration of maritime, rail and road networks, this complex has played a vital role in stimulating the country’s urban and rural economy. Designed according to the rationalist theories, these buildings have used steel, glass and reinforced concrete to the maximum of their possibilities. When the European Community was created, the changes in customs, business and industrial practices caused the gradual decline of the site.
Het Douanegebouw op de site van Tour & Taxis werd gebouwd in 1907, volgens de plannen van Ernest Van Humbeek. De stijl van het gebouw is gelijkaardig met deze van het Koninklijk Stapelhuis.
Erigé au début du XXe siècle, le complexe de Tour & Taxis (35 ha) constitue l’un des plus beaux exemples de plateforme multimodale au monde. Conçu comme une concentration de réseaux maritime, ferroviaire et routier, cet ensemble a joué un rôle crucial dans la dynamisation de l’économie urbaine et rurale du pays. Elaborés conformément aux théories rationalistes, ces bâtiments ont utilisé l’acier, le verre et le béton armé au maximum de leurs possibilités. Suite à la création de la Communauté Européenne, les modifications des pratiques douanières, commerciales et industrielles provoquèrent le déclin progressif du site.
After several years of harmful mistakes to the buildings, the entire site was on the point of coming back to life through the implementation of a new programme, which geared towards a mixed approach. During the initial phase, two emblematic buildings, with a total surface area of ±60.000 sqm above ground - the Royal Warehouse and the branch, underwent an attentive renovation to preserve their aesthetic, heritage and organisational qualities, while having them fully entering the XXIst century. The works entrusted to Archi 2000 included all the structural works.
Het douanegebouw onderging in 2008 een diepgaande renovatie van zijn ruwbouw. De werken die werden uitgevoerd in het tweede semester van 2016, hadden als doel de ruimte her in te richten om om tijdelijk en bij wijze van gunst onderdak te bieden aan een reclame- en marketingbureau. Het uiteindelijke bedoeling is echter om er een hotel in te planten. Er loopt momenteel een studie over het concept en een toekomstige stedenbouwkundige vergunningsaanvraag voor de bestemmingswijziging is in opmaak. Het toekomstige hotel zal het mogelijk maken de bezoekers te ontvangen van de evenementen op de site van Tour & Taxis.
Après plusieurs années d’errements préjudiciables aux bâtiments, l’ensemble du site est sur le point de reprendre vie par l’implantation d’un nouveau programme jouant ouvertement la carte de la mixité. Dans une première phase, deux bâtiments emblématiques d’une surface totale de ± 60.000 m² hors-sol – l’entrepôt Royal et la Succursale – ont été l’objet d’une rénovation attentive, soucieuse de préserver leurs qualités esthétiques, patrimoniales et organisationnelles tout en les faisant entrer de plain pied dans le XXIe siècle. Les travaux confiés à Archi 2000 concernaient l’ensemble du gros-oeuvre fermé.
