Meeûs 29

Located in the center of the European Quarter, this building borders the corner of Square de Meeûs and rue de la Science in 1000 Brussels.

After the Second World War, and especially after the designation of Brussels as the headquarters of several European institutions, we observed during the 1960s a significant densification of the district and a profound change in its use towards a dominance of the Office function. The Léopold district gradually became the European district and the Place de l'Industrie was renamed "Square de Meeûs".

The project site has not escaped the transformation of the Léopold district into a European district. Assuralia bought several plots of land and built its company headquarters on the corner of the prestigious Square de Meeûs.

Christian and Jean-Pierre Housiaux, Architects, submitted a permit request in 1967 for the construction of an office building of R+8 size, the dominant volume around the Meeûs square.

Once the construction site was completed, Assuralia acquired the house of n°31 neighbor and the building is enlarged.

Christian and Jean-Pierre Housiaux submitted a permit application in 1971 for the extension of the Maison de l’Assurance. The writing of the new facade is identical to that of the first part.

Existing Facade - Architects: C. et J-P. Housiaux

We used this observation as a guideline to develop a resolutely sustainable project, focused on the following principles:

- The renovation and extension of the existing building, while maintaining the street facades and the office use:

Brutalist inspired, the front facade has the particularity of presenting a modular and systematic assembly, typical of the 60s.

It is built in light-colored architectural concrete on a 170 cm frame, and is expressed via a play of prefabricated geometric modules projecting from the alignment of the facade and which are nested with each other.

Faced with these undeniable architectural qualities, preserving the structure and the main expression of the building seemed obvious to us. ‍

Thus, volumetrically, our interventions fall under acupuncture. They concern the extension of the top floor and the rear expansion of the office floors.

These additions are made with a wooden structure in order to limit the environmental impact.

The façade of the roof volume will, for its part, express an architectural concrete colonnade in continuity with the aesthetics of the existing building.

The existing rear facades, which, conversely, present no architectural quality, are completely renovated and “rewritten” to adapt to the maintained volumes. They will be finished with a light-colored brick cladding.‍

All the new frames will be in an anthracite-colored wood-aluminum mix with light-colored glazing.‍‍

- Activation of the spaces located on the ground floor;‍

On this point , it was decided to :

· establish a commercial area at the corner of the building, because this function makes it possible to liven up the ground floor and offers a mix of functions to the project; ·

· establish bicycles in the basement -01 to create "more activating" spaces along the facades of the ground floor, such as the cafetaria;

· create a mezzanine opening in the entrance hall in order to offer a space more pleasant and dynamic by visually connecting it to the spaces of the first floor and the garden inside the island.

- The development of the area inside the block ;

The project has evolved towards an increasingly significant dedensification of this area in order to:‍

·  improve the brightness and views of the interior spaces;

·  offer users a large and largely green outdoor space. The development of this space was entrusted to a landscape architect;

·  participate in the overall dedensification of the interior of the block;

·  create visual contacts between the street and the interior of the block.

- The modification of part of the basement with a view to improving bicycle access to the building by reducing the number of parking spaces; ‍

- The development of high performance: BREEAM, WELL, sustainable, eco-responsible, …‍

Technically, all the equipment is state-of-the-art: heat pumps, solar panels, electrical terminals, fossil free, etc. Everything is put in place to reduce energy consumption to a minimum.‍‍
