Bordet

In spring 2009, we won the call for tenders for the reconstruction of the Bordet Hospital on the site of the Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht, in temporary association with the architectural firm Brunet-Saunier in Paris, which has great expertise in hospital construction, and with the engineering firm TPF Engineering for the stability and special techniques.

The construction of a centre that specialises solely in the fight against cancer and is known worldwide for this, constitutes a vast project of great complexity. A large number of very specific and often innovative technologies come together here.

The designed building is compact and develops around six interior patios and is traversed along its entire length by a central distribution axis with double circulation (service and public) that serves eight modules of combinable spaces, each with a surface area of 800 to 1,000 m2. The stairs, lifts and technical ducts are brought together in the central part so as not to impede future redesigns.

Great attention was paid to the comfort of both patient and staff. Each hospitalisation floor is organised into care units. Each unit is arranged around a nursing station to minimise walking distances for nursing staff. For both patients and their families, the rooms are brightly lit. Close to each nursing station there is a well-lit meeting area where patients can sit together with their relatives. Numerous services (shops, information points, children's playrooms, etc.) and a personalised reception are located on the ground floor.

The spatial layout was also designed to highlight the other main vision of the new Bordet Institute, namely to promote a multidisciplinary institution, informal contacts between all healthcare providers moving around patients and researchers. The new building conveys an atmosphere of proximity. A first plateau unites the researchers, doctors as well as biologists and chemists, and a second plateau houses the clinical research welded with the collection of data and samples from the patients. The aim of this facility is to promote the exchange between floors of data and discoveries in order to use them more quickly in the care provided to the patients.

Another special feature of the project is to establish links at various levels with the Erasmus hospital, which is itself in an expansion phase. These connections between a specialised cancer control centre and a general university hospital will allow for natural partnerships. The whole will constitute an optimal facility to ensure a general reception of patients requiring all possible types of treatment, including complex oncological care.

From an architectural and aesthetic point of view, our intention was to create a very contemporary but also timeless building. From the outset, we insisted on the transparency of the building, of a hospital with great natural light, with a welcoming character on the outside and a human atmosphere on the inside. Both in the rooms and in the medical cabinets, we opted to make the glazed walls as large as possible.

Contrary to what is common in traditional hospitals, the window sills have a height of 45 cm above the floor, which allows, on the one hand, to create a seat for visitors and, on the other hand, to offer patients a wider view from the bed to the outside. The south side of the building, mainly intended for patient rooms, opens onto a beautiful classified green outdoor space.

An alternation of transparent parts with other screen-printed glass parts plays in the freely cleaned-out facades... no presence this time of architectural concrete. The materials can be easily maintained and will evolve favourably over time.

The new Jules Bordet Institute has an area of about 80,000 m2 with a capacity of 250 hospital beds as well as 40 places in the day hospital.

The building was inaugurated in October 2021 and received its first patients in November 2021.
