The dossier on the KBC headquarter, a series of buildings originally built by the Deutsche Bank, located about 500 meters from Brussels' Grand Place, is one of the most exciting projects that Archi200 had ever dealt with. The project consisted in "redoing" a series of constructions built in different phases and successively transformed according to the needs of the KBC, but without any common thread. This process resulted in a complete lack of readability. We found ourselves facing an authentic labyrinth which the jewelry Wolfers was part of, designed and built in 1909 by Victor Horta, the building is listed by the Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites. A set of single-family houses dating back to the seventeenth century for the oldest was also included in the perimeter.

The project reached nearly 30,000 m² and consisted in demolishing, rebuilding, reassigning, renovating, restoring, but, above all, improving the use and reading of the plan. All this could have been achieved by finding the original plot. The final result turned out as the construction of a mixed ensemble. The office space (± 20,000 m²) was partly installed in the original building, around three patios, and partly in the restored Wolfers building. The accommodations were located in the seven houses on rue de la Montagne. They can be accessed through a dead end that allows to access the upper floors of each house while maintaining the commercial area. Contemporary apartments were constructed to replace an obsolete office building. The building on the street hosts traditional apartments, while the inner of the block accommodates lofts with beautiful terraces overlooking the courtyard. Approximately thirty apartments and seven single-family houses were created on this site. The collaboration with the City of Brussels, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites was remarkable, and the project was awarded, in 2004, by the Quartier des Arts. From a personal point of view, this project introduces the approach to which Archi 2000 as remained faithful since then: a contextual architecture, the objectification of choices and the analysis of their consequences on the qualitative, functional, urban, aesthetic, sustainable and budgetary level, as well as the refusal of any formalism and any gratuitous effect.
