Ce projet est situé en plein cœur de Bruxelles, à l’angle formé par la rue des Paroissiens, la place Sainte Gudule, la rue de la Chancellerie et la rue des Colonies. Il consiste en la réunification et la remise en ordre de deux entités distinctes ayant subi de multiples transformations entre 1902 (construction partielle du 1er bâtiment d’origine) et 1992 (rénovation lourde avec démolition totale des planchers existants et conservation partielle d’une partie des façades historiques).
This project is located right in the centre of Brussels, on the corner between rue des Paroissiens, the Sainte Gudule place, Rue de la Chancellerie and Rue des Colonies. It consists in reuniting and rearranging the two distinct entities, which underwent multiple transformations between 1902 (partial construction of the first original building) and 1992 (deep renovation with total demolition of the existing floors and partial conservation of a section of the historical façades).
Dit project situeert zich in hartje Brussel, op de hoek van de Parochiaanstraat, het Sinter-Goedeleplein, de Kanselarijstraat en de Koloniënstraat. Het bestaat in het herenigen en weer op orde brengen van twee onderscheiden gebouwen die meerdere verbouwingswerken ondergingen tussen 1902 (gedeeltelijke bouw van het eerste oorspronkelijke gebouw) en 1992 (ingrijpende verbouwing met totaalafbraak van de bestaande vloeren en behoud van een deel van de historische gevels.
Les nouvelles interventions, si elles permettent de clarifier l’usage du bâtiment tout en conservant les dalles et les noyaux, ambitionnent de redonner de la cohérence et du prestige à un ensemble architectural fortement « endommagé » par diverses interventions malheureuses. Les plateaux de bureaux et les circulations verticales sont aménagés afin de répondre aux besoins contemporains d’ efficacité, de divisibilité, de flexibilité et de modularité. La façade ancienne est conservée et rénovée au niveau des étages. Le soubassement, fortement endommagé par les travaux de 1992, est réinterprété. Ensuite, les autres façades sont totalement remplacées. Celles-ci, en béton architectonique de teinte identique au ton de l’ancienne façade existante, affirment leur modernité de façon discrète et dialoguent sans ostentation avec la verticalité gothique de la cathédrale des Saints Michel et Gudule. Quant au hall, il fait face à la prestigieuse cathédrale et se prolonge vers une mezzanine en suivant la forte pente de la rue de la Chancellerie, créant ainsi une relation particulière entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur du bâtiment. La courbe de la façade qui accompagne ce parcours ouvre progressivement les vues vers la cathédrale.
If the renovations make it possible to clarify the use of the building while preserving the slabs and the cores, these aim to give back the coherence and prestige to an architectural complex highly “damaged” by several unfortunate interventions. The offices plateaux and the vertical circulations are arranged to meet the contemporary needs for efficiency, divisibility, flexibility and modularity. The old façade is preserved and renovated on the storeys. The basement, highly damaged by the works of 1992, is reinterpreted. Furthermore, the other façades are entirely replaced. These, realised in architectural concrete of an identical shade to the tone of the old existing façade, assert their modernity and dialogue, without any ostentation, with the Gothic verticality of the Cathedral of Saint Michel and Gudule. As for the hall, it faces the prestigious cathedral and extends towards a mezzanine, following the steep slope of Rue de la Chancellerie, thereby creating a particular relationship between the inside and the outside of the building. The curve of the façade, leading this path, progressively opens the view towards the cathedral.
De nieuwe ingrepen, die het mogelijk maken de bestemming van het gebouw te verduidelijken, met behoud van de vloerplaten en kernen, hebben tot doel samenhang en prestige terug te geven aan een architecturaal geheel dat zwaar «beschadigd» werd door meerdere ongelukkige verbouwingen. De kantoorplateau’s en het verticale circulaties zijn ingericht om aan de hedendaagse vereisten inzake efficiëntie in gebruik, indeelbaarheid, flexibiliteit en modulariteit te voldoen. De oude gevel werd bewaard en gerenoveerd op de verdiepingen. Aan de onderbouw, welke zeer beschadigd werd door de werken van 1992, werd een nieuwe interpretative gegeven. Alle andere gevels werden volledig vervangen en heropgebouwd in architectonisch beton met een kleur gelijk aan deze van de oude bestaande gevel, om zodoende op een discrete wijze hun moderniteit te benadrukken en tegelijkertijd, zonder opvallend vertoon, met de gothische verticaliteit van de St-Michiels en Sint-Goedelekatedraal in dialoog treden. De inkomhal geeft uit op de prestigieuze katedraal en leidt aan de binnenzijde, en volgend op de redelijk steile helling van de Kanselarijstraat, naar een tussenverdieping, waardoor aldus een bijzondere relatie tussen de binnen- en buitenzijde van het gebouw tot stand gebracht wordt. De boog in de gevel, die dit verloop volgt, opent geleidelijk de uitzichten naar het kathedraal.
